Day 34 - 6/27/08

Today was another busy one, and given how the Obama-Clinton "Unity" meeting dominated the headlines, you can probably guess why. In fact the "Unity" meeting is the topic of today's edition of The Audacity of Obama, which I strongly suggest you check out.

I spent most of the day following the event and the various other news items that popped up. Not a lot notable, but nothing too boring either. A high point came at the end of the day, when the finance department had its "fire sale," which resulted in me becoming the proud owner of an autographed copy of Faith of My Fathers - a magnificent book that I highly recommend to all of you, regardless of your political affiliation. There are few stories I've ever read that speak more profoundly to the strength of the human spirit, and even if you don't plan to vote for John McCain, you owe it to yourself to know his story.

After work I changed clothes and then headed out into the storm to get some dinner. I had a couple of beers as well and then headed out for a walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. I had another of my "Oh God, I'm in D.C." moments before heading back to the apartment, soaked in sweat and exhausted.

On the subject of the Obama-Clinton meeting, it's a necessary step for their party, one that's been done many time in the past, but it seems somehow disingenuous this time. It's certainly not unprecedented. Remember, Ronald Reagan and George Bush were far from friendly during the GOP primary in 1980, but by the time they joined forces, no one much cared about their previous conflict. But because of the sheer ferocity with which Clinton and Obama competed during the primary cycle, and their history of switching positions for political expediency, their sudden affection for one another seems a bit forced. It's not going to matter much, I think. There's no way Clinton will end up on the ticket with Obama, but any voter who might be swayed by their joint appearance has probably already decided to return to the Obama fold.

Hopefully, there aren't too many of those about.

Tomorrow looks to be a busy but uneventful day. I think I'll spend some time studying for the GMAT, which I hope to take in August. I'm putting together my list of grad schools to apply to as we speak. I'll let you know when I make more progress on that front. Until tomorrow, adios.
