As I mentioned yesterday, the RNC's Eisenhower Interns were privileged to have breakfast this morning with Karl Rove. For those of you who might not know, Rove was Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Adviser to President Bush for nearly seven years, and had masterminded Bush's 2000 and 2004 campaigns. He's also been widely derided by liberals and many in the media as Bush's "Evil Genius" and falsely accused of a number of improprieties. When one meets these larger-than-life figures, it's always interesting to try and gauge the kind of people they really are. With Rove, the impression was a positive one. He was clearly an incredibly sharp guy, and had a command of numbers like no one I've ever known, casually and confidently spouting off election statistics from decades past to reinforce the points he was making. But he's also a fantastically funny guy with a very self-deprecating sense of humor. He referred to himself with pride as an absolute nerd, which greatly endeared him to me. After giving us a bit of background and telling us a couple of anecdotes, he took questions for about half an hour. His answers were informative and he delivered them with good humor. All in all, a great way to start the day.
As for work itself, I spent most of the day attending to my usual duties, as tends to happen on a relatively slow news day. It was a bit of struggle to get through, as I only managed to sleep four hours last night. When the day ended, I managed to get back to the apartment shortly before the rain began, and haven't bothered to venture out since. I'm completely exhausted, and will certainly be getting to bed early.
